SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health is a child and youth mental health centre integrated with The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). We are located in the northwest area in the City of Toronto, on Sheppard Ave. West and downtown on Jarvis St. We offer a range of in-person and virtual mental health services for children and youth (infancy to 18) and their families, from prevention and early intervention through assessment, counselling and therapy and intensive services. We are also connected to the continuum of mental health services for children and youth supported by SickKids: the Brain and Mental Health Program, the SickKids TeleLink Mental Health Program, the SickKids CCMH Learning Institute and our online resources through AboutKidsHealthFind out more about SickKids CCMH.

We are currently seeking applicants for a full-time Child and Family Therapist in our Community Outreach and Intervention Initiative. The Child and Family Therapist provides direct mental health treatment services, including individual, family and/or group treatment to clients in settings that include CCMH locations and in the surrounding community. The Position is works in and around our Sheppard office.  

Key Responsibilities

Therapeutic Services

  • Work collaboratively with external stakeholders in the community to engage with children, youth and families who otherwise may not connect with mental health services 
  • Provides individual assessments, treatment and follow-up services to children, youth and families within an assigned area   
  • Provides individual therapy, family therapy and/or group treatment within an assigned area   
  • Provides case management, liaison and referral services for clients, internally and externally 
  • Coordinates services with internal and external service providers, requesting/reviewing documents and reports to inform client service and treatment planning  
  • Collaborates with families, supervisors and inter-professional teams to develop services that support treatment plans 
  • Completes all client documentation and submits reporting information in a timely and succinct manner meeting agency, legal and professional requirements 
  • Promotes the direction of the program and Centre by engaging in identifying, developing and implementing program goal(s), projects or services 
  • Contributes to the Centre’s academic mandate and to the field of children’s mental health through training, education and/or the supervision and evaluation of students/volunteers  
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of therapeutic services and best practices within the industry  
  • Makes decisions within related to treatment needs of clients and on-going intervention

  • Complies with the organization’s vision, policies and procedures
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in a mental health discipline (if from outside Ontario, must demonstrate that all registration requirements can be met at time of hiring)  
  • Registration with the relevant accrediting professional body is required 
  • Minimum 3 years related experience in children’s mental health treatment, working in communities 
  • Experience and understanding of issues of marginalization and oppression are necessary to work in this role  
  • Skills related to the treatment of clients presenting with complex needs  
  • Good problem-solving skills to analyse complex client issues and recommend solutions 
  • Demonstrated skills in therapeutic engagement and interventions  
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)  
  • Ability to apply a cultural humility lens and values of equity in all aspects of work 
  • Training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy would be considered an asset  

 Mandate Requirements

As a health care centre, our highest priority is the safety of patients, families and staff.  As a result, we are adopting all prevention measures to ensure the safety of our clients, families and our staff.  Therefore, any offer of employment is conditional upon proof of full vaccination with a Health Canada or World Health Organization (WHO) approved COVID-19 vaccination no later than fourteen (14) calendar days prior to the effective start date. Should there be an exemption of vaccination based on a medical, or human rights reason, proof will need to be provided, in addition to participation in regular COVID-19 testing based on exposure risk as well as participation in vaccine education. All offers of employment are conditional on meeting these minimum requirements, failure to comply will lead to offer of employment being immediately rescinded

This position will require that the successful candidate:  

  • Work flexible hours to meet the needs of clients (i.e. evening work) 
  • Travel, as required when providing service in the community
