POSITION DETAILS: Full-time-Negotiable, 12 Month Contract ( Possibility of Extension)

SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health is a child and youth mental health centre integrated with The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). We are located in the northwest area in the City of Toronto, on Sheppard Ave. West and downtown on Jarvis St. We offer a range of in-person and virtual mental health services for children and youth (infancy to 18) and their families, from prevention and early intervention through assessment, counselling and therapy and intensive services. We are also connected to the continuum of mental health services for children and youth supported by SickKids: the Brain and Mental Health Program, the SickKids TeleLink Mental Health Program, the SickKids CCMH Learning Institute and our online resources through AboutKidsHealthFind out more about SickKids CCMH.

We are seeking a child/adolescent psychiatrist to work as independent contractor in the Individual and Family Service Department with a particular focus on our Sheppard site, which serves the north-west quadrant of Toronto.  The successful candidate will provide both direct and indirect mental health services, including psychiatric assessments, individual, family, and/or group treatment, medication trials, and consultation to our allied health professionals/teams. 

Key Responsibilities

Therapeutic Services

  • Provide Mental Health Assessments (MHA’s) for the General Out-patient (Individual and Family) and Infant Psychiatry Programs as requested. 
  • Provide short-term assessment follow-up as required, to ensure implementation of the recommendations. 
  • Provide indirect consultation to the General Out-patient and Infant Psychiatry Teams (Sheppard) regarding their cases.  Offer psychiatric input to formulation, treatment planning, and support of allied health professionals. 
  • Be a member of the multi-disciplinary Child/Adolescent Assessment Team (CAAT-S) at Sheppard. 
  • Carry a defined treatment case load of individual, family, or group therapy and medication trials. 
  • Collaborate with collaterals as required. (e.g., schools, family doctors, pediatricians, etc.) 
  • Complete all client documentation in a timely and succinct manner, in keeping with professional and Agency requirements. 
  • Supervise residents and Fellows as required. 
  • Teach medical students as required. 
  • Attends Medical Staff meetings and other committees as required, to contribute to the Centre’s academic and quality improvement mandate. 
  • May engage in Research that is aligned with the Agency’s Strategic Plan. 


  • Complies with the organization’s vision, policies and procedures
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management


  • This position requires a Medical Degree (M.D.) and Fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCP).   
  • Registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is required, along with proof of being a member in good standing, and having an Independent or Academic License. 
  • Completion of 2 years’ training in child/adolescent psychiatry or credentialing by the Sub-Specialty Committee of the Royal College is required. 
  • Evidence of malpractice insurance coverage (e.g., CMPA) is required. 
  • Clearance via a Vulnerable Sector screen is required. 
  • Experience in teaching, training, and supervision of residents, medical students, and allied health students is preferred. 
  • Having a Faculty appointment in the Dept. of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, or being eligible for such, is a requirement. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work with diverse, marginalized, and racialized populations, as well as trauma-informed models of care. 

Mandate Requirements

As a health care centre, our highest priority is the safety of patients, families and staff.  As a result, we are adopting all prevention measures to ensure the safety of our clients, families and our staff.  Therefore, any offer of employment is conditional upon proof of full vaccination with a Health Canada or World Health Organization (WHO) approved COVID-19 vaccination no later than fourteen (14) calendar days prior to the effective start date. Should there be an exemption of vaccination based on a medical, or human rights reason, proof will need to be provided, in addition to participation in regular COVID-19 testing based on exposure risk as well as participation in vaccine education. All offers of employment are conditional on meeting these minimum requirements, failure to comply will lead to offer of employment being immediately rescinded
