Trauma recovery: Processing guilt and shame

Trauma recovery: Processing guilt and shame

Equip yourself to help clients process guilt and shame, enhancing recovery from PTSD and complex trauma.

For decades, therapeutic work for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) focused on fear, helplessness, and horror. This trauma training on guilt and shame addresses an expanded understanding of PTSD, which now includes these emotions. Evidence shows that unprocessed guilt and shame can increase the risk of developing and maintaining PTSD symptoms and can slow healing in clients with complex PTSD and developmental trauma.

This trauma training webinar, led by trauma expert Natalie Zlodre Choy will:

  • Define guilt and shame, and understand their similarities and differences
  • Explore different subtypes of both emotions
  • Learn how to structure conversations with clients to address unspoken needs and dilemmas hat drive the guilt and shame experience.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify 7 types of guilt
  • Process conversations when the client:
    • Feels guilty but is not guilty
    • Has a distorted view of their role in a negative experience
    • Is genuinely guilty
  • Identify 7 types of shame
  • Guide clients through shame and a shame-prone identity
  • Pinpoint the source of a shame-prone identity
  • Understand the connection between dissociation and shame
  • Change shame-prone patterns

Register now to deepen your clinical skills in addressing guilt and shame in trauma recovery with adult clients.
