Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What do I do if I feel unwell?
To help protect the health of our clients, staff and visitors, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, we encourage you to consider rescheduling your appointment. If you choose to attend your appointment, you will be required to wear a mask for the duration of your visit. Masks are available at our reception desks.
Symptoms include: runny nose; congestion; cough; low-grade fever; sore throat
What if I need to change or cancel my appointment?
If you cannot make your appointment, please contact Scheduling at 416-924-1164 ext. 8705 or centralscheduling@sickkidscmh.ca as soon as possible.
How long will my appointment be?
Appointments range in length from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on your service. You will know the length of your appointment before you come on site, and your service provider will tell you the expected number of sessions at your first appointment.
Is there anything I shouldn’t bring with me?
There are a few things not to bring with you to our treatment centres (including our EarlyON Centres at Sheppard and the Bathurst Finch Hub).
Latex balloons: As latex is an allergen, any balloons brought into our sites should be mylar.
Peanuts or foods containing peanuts: At GH-CCMH, our sites are peanut-safe. While we can’t guarantee that we are completely peanut-free, we discourage bringing peanut products onto our sites.
Pets: Companion animals aren’t allowed at our sites due to health and safety concerns. Under our Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Policy and Procedure we welcome service animals (see below under General guidelines). Pets or emotional support animals are not included in the AODA.
Plants and flowers: These items can aggravate allergies and sensitivities and bring insects into our buildings.
Where can I park?
Jarvis site: Parking availability around the Jarvis site is limited and expensive, with hourly-rate parking spots distributed throughout the community. You can search for parking by clicking on the Jarvis St. map on our Contact Us page, selecting “nearby” and entering “parking.” Reaching our downtown site via transit is recommended, if this is accessible to you.
Sheppard site: There is free parking at the Sheppard site.
Where is your Wheel-Trans drop-off location?
The drop off for both locations is directly in front of the entrances. At Jarvis, the accessibility ramp is just north of the main doors.
I’m bringing a client to the Centre. What can I do while I’m waiting before or during the appointment?
Pull a book or toy from our shelves
You will find books and toys in each of the waiting areas, and fish to watch as they swim in their aquarium.
Request a colouring sheet
All ages can ask for a colouring sheet and pencil crayons at reception. Just for participating, you can enter a monthly prize draw for art supplies.
Visit the wellness room (while the client you are with is in session)
Both of our sites have a wellness room (Room 112 at the Jarvis site: Room 129 at the Sheppard site). These are equipped with mats and boosters where you can pray, meditate, stretch/do yoga, or just have a quiet place to rest. Our wellness spaces are to be used by a single person or family at one time. There is signage outside of the rooms that indicate if they are available so please set to “in use” before entering. If you are using the space while your child is in therapy, tell reception so they know where you are if your child comes out of their session.
Can I bring my other children?
Parental supervision is required for any visiting siblings. You may speak with your service provider ahead of your appointment to determine if including siblings in the appointment is possible.
Where can I nurse and change my baby?
You are free to nurse your baby in our waiting areas or our wellness rooms. If you would like to inquire about private room availability for nursing purposes, speak to reception.
If you are attending the EarlyON Child and Family Centre at the Sheppard site, you are free to nurse in the program room or speak to EarlyON staff if you would like privacy to nurse in a separate room.
There are change tables at each site: You can change your baby at Sheppard in Room 102 or Room 105 (the EarlyON washroom), and at the Jarvis site in Rooms 104A and 104B (the accessible washrooms).
What does your washroom signage mean?
Instead of traditional “women’s” and “men’s” washrooms, washrooms at our sites are gender neutral. These are designed to accommodate everyone, including caregivers with young children, and those who are transgender, non-binary, or gender fluid. The signage focuses on the features available in each washroom, not the gender of the person using them. Learn more about the signage.
Can I take photos/videos/audio while I’m on site?
We only allow photography and videography at our sites with signed consent, arranged through the Communications department. Capturing images, video, or audio of staff, clients and participants, and/or sharing on social media or otherwise, is not permitted. (This includes images/videos/audio of your own family, due to the risk of inadvertently including other clients and/or identifying information in your image/recording.)
While recording of sessions by clients/families is prohibited, note that you may access your health records though a written request: See the full process.
Do you accommodate smudging at your sites?
Yes, we can accommodate smudging at our sites. If you wish to incorporate this into one of your sessions, please let Scheduling know during your intake process. Already a client? Speak with your service provider. To do the smudging safely, we have health and safety protocols to follow, so please give us at least 48 hours’ notice.
General Guidelines
Please note that for clients in a day treatment program at a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) school, TDSB policies also apply.
