profiles of various aged men and boys for body image and eating disorders in boys and men

Equip yourself with tools to better assess, engage, and treat boys and men facing body image challenges and disordered eating.

This training is suitable for:

  • Mental Health Professionals: psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists, social workers.
  • Medical Professionals: nurses, psychiatrists, pediatricians, family doctors.

Client category: Professionals working with individuals 12 years to adulthood.

Level of training: Introductory

CE hours: 3

Overview:

While clinicians often associate body image concerns and eating disorders with girls and women, growing research shows that they also affect boys and men. This presentation led by Dr. Kyle T. Ganson, will explore the latest literature on body image issues, eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia, and muscle-building behaviours (e.g., muscularity-oriented dietary practices, use of muscle-building dietary supplements and anabolic-androgenic steroids) in males. This review will include updated conceptualizations and statistics of these conditions and behaviours.

This half-day training will explore nuances between eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia among boys and men. It will also examine current clinical classification debates. It will look at common barriers to assessment and treatment for boys and men. The session will offer practical recommendations and adaptations that clinicians can apply in their practice for more effective interventions.

Participants will engage in meaningful self-reflection activities and guided discussions. They will also explore case studies to apply presentation content and deepen their understanding of body image and eating disorders among boys and men.

Learning objectives:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of body image and eating disorders in boys and men.
  • Recognize the unique risk factors contributing to body image concerns in male clients.
  • Identify 2–3 common barriers to accurate assessment and effective treatment.
  • Identify 2-3 treatment considerations and adaptations to better support male clients in practice.
