Treating suicide and self-harm in youth with eating disorders

Eating disorders (EDs) are complex biological and psychiatric illnesses associated with significant health risks. While clinicians consider family-based treatment (FBT) a first-line approach, many patients do not respond adequately, and relapse rates remain high. Research indicates that specialized treatment approaches are necessary for individuals with co-occurring suicide risk, self-injury, trauma, and specific bio-temperamental characteristics.

Standard ED treatments do not address multiple high-risk behaviors or manage chronic suicide risk and self-injury. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) offers a comprehensive framework for managing emotion regulation and interpersonal difficulties. Integrating DBT with FBT provides a robust approach for families and adolescents struggling with multiple problem behaviors alongside an eating disorder.

This introductory training will cover:

  • The fundamental principles, interventions and distinct phases of FBT
  • The rationale for integrating DBT and FBT
  • The adapted biosocial theory with clients
  • Dialectical strategies and DBT treatment assumptions
  • DBT commitment strategies to manage food and weight challenges
  • Teaching families how to use behaviour chain analysis
  • When and how to integrate multifamily skills into FBT

This training will equip professionals with essential tools to address the complex needs of youth with eating disorders and co-occurring high-risk behaviors.
