Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for adolescents: Embody the model and supercharge your therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a powerful, evidence-based therapeutic approach that addresses the universal challenges of human existence. It views suffering as a natural response to life’s inherent difficulties. In today’s post-pandemic landscape, where many young people face heightened levels of distress, ACT offers invaluable support as they navigate an increasingly interactive and uncertain world. This therapeutic model empowers adolescents to engage with their thoughts and emotions authentically and compassionately, fostering meaningful connections with others and guiding them toward what truly matters in their lives.
Webinar structure:
Day 1: Foundations of ACT
The first day of the workshop provides participants with a comprehensive overview of the theoretical and philosophical foundations of ACT. This foundational knowledge is crucial for effective assessment, case conceptualization, and subsequent treatment interventions. For those already familiar with ACT, day 1 serves as a valuable refresher, ensuring everyone is aligned before moving forward.
Gap between days 1 and 2
Participants will have a dedicated period to consolidate their learning and practice formulation. This time is essential for deepening understanding and preparing for the practical applications to be explored on day 2.
Day 2: Practical application of ACT
On the second day, participants will engage in hands-on practice, experimenting with ACT interventions. The workshop will include a mix of didactic instruction, experiential exercises, small group practice, and live demonstrations, making the content relevant for both in-person and virtual therapy settings.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Comprehend the ACT perspective: Understand how ACT conceptualizes human suffering and its implications for therapeutic practice.
- Identify therapeutic processes: Recognize and articulate the key therapeutic processes within the ACT model.
- Integrate philosophical and scientific insights: Grasp the philosophical and scientific foundations of ACT, enhancing flexibility in therapeutic approaches.
- Develop case conceptualizations: Create ACT-consistent case conceptualizations that inform effective treatment planning.
- Engage in experiential learning: Participate in experiential exercises that demonstrate how ACT can transform perspectives and behaviors for both therapists and their young clients.
- Structure meaningful sessions: Learn how to structure therapy sessions to connect with clients’ values, fostering meaningful behavior change.
