Better together: Practical integration of CBT and attachment theory in therapy

overlapping circles with text better together

Therapists often view attachment-based interventions and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as distinct or even contradictory due to their differing theoretical foundations. CBT emphasizes cognitive restructuring and present-focused skills training, while attachment-based interventions delve into relational history and emotional healing. This divergence can lead to debates about their compatibility and integration. Clinicians who ascribe to one theoretical orientation may be reluctant to recognize the value of the other. Those who identify as “eclectic” may not know how to effectively integrate the two theories.

Dr. Rana Pishva will show that the two theoretical approaches have much in common. She will also demonstrate that therapists can integrate them effectively in therapy for various clinical presentations and populations. The training will highlight the intersections of CBT and attachment-based interventions. It will focus on their underlying drivers of distress, mechanisms of change, value of the therapeutic relationship, and even strategies. Participants will learn to draw on the strength of both theories to develop a comprehensive case conceptualization. They will learn how to use integrated strategies to address both symptomatic distress and deeply rooted attachment wounds. Attendees will walk away with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to support their clients with strategies that emphasize cognitions and interpersonal connections equally.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand how the historical view has seen the principles of CBT and attachment theory as mutually exclusive.
  • Recognize shared principles between CBT and attachment theory, including their focus on internal beliefs, emotional regulation, and interpersonal patterns.
  • Develop a comprehensive case conceptualization that integrates both CBT and attachment-informed approaches in the client treatment plan.
  • Implement practical, integrative strategies in therapy for a range of presentations including depression, anxiety, and trauma.
  • Learn ways to tailor knowledge and strategies for various populations, including working with children, adolescents, and adults.

Don’t miss the opportunity to refine your therapeutic skills. Register today to learn how to seamlessly integrate CBT and attachment-based interventions for better client outcomes.
