Using validation to support emotional development in young children: Building an emotional landscape

For parents of children aged 0 to 6 years

A vital part of child development is growing a well-developed emotional self. Building a child’s capacity to withstand big emotions and learning skills in communicating emotions often happens through relationship with caregivers. Emotional development is also reinforced and supported by the overall landscape of a child’s experience within the family. How do we create and attend to the wide array of emotions that children go through instead of getting caught up in the moments when big emotions disrupt behaviour? How do we create environments in which children can explore and navigate their emotional selves? This interactive workshop opens up space for dialogue and sharing of how to create an overall family environment that fosters emotional development. We will explore how the practice of validation can help contribute to building positive emotional landscapes at home.
